Other than a sprinkling of The Sugar Hill Gang, courtesy of a buddy's older brother, my introduction to rap music was the single Rock Box from Run DMC's first album, the self titled Run DMC. It's the only day I can recall, w/o prompting anyway, from my 3 years at St Pauls Junior High. I wasn't dealing with any type of traumatic events in my life, and my drug use/abuse was still years away. I was in the 7th grade. We were outside, in freezing temps for recess, which took place in the school parking lot. I'd just flamed a dart,🚬 ,, anticipating recess ending, when through my smokey haze, arrives an 8th grader named Mike R***o. Great dude, Mike. Before I know it, his Sony Walkman's headphones are over my ears. I was listening to Run DMC's Rock Box for the 1st time. I obviously couldn't see myself, but my facial expression, had Mike smiling ear to ear. I have no doubt, I'd have connected with rap music, eventually, but Run DMC, Rock Box, and, of course, Mike R***o, undoubtedly, accelerated the connection.
